Homeworks & Solutions

There will be a homework assignment almost every week. Homework is usually due one week after it is assigned. Late homework will not be accepted! Homework problem sets and solutions are given below in pdf. If there are any typos/mistakes in the solution, please notify me or the TA. Homework Statistics. For privacy concern, we will not post the exact grades here. You may find your own grades for this course on Compass, where you can also view the statistics.

Administrative Information

Instructor: Professor Yi Ma
Classes: TuTh 8:30am-9:50am, 252 Mechanical Engineering Building.
Office Hours: Tuesday 1:00-2:30pm; Place: 145 Coordinated Science Lab.
Research Office: 145 CSL, Phone: 244-0871.
Email: yima AT UIUC DOT EDU

Teaching Assistant: Shankar Rao
Office Hours: Thursday 2:00-3:00pm; Place: 154 Coordinated Science Lab.
Email: srrao AT UIUC DOT EDU

Grading Policy: Homework (30%), one Midterm (30%), and one Final (40%). If you are among the top 3% in the final, you will get an "A" no matter how badly you have flunked your midterm or homework.
*Homework: You are allowed to discuss on the homework in small groups, but you must write the solution independently to hand in. No late homework will be accepted (unless an extension is granted by the instructor).
*Midterm Exam: 7:00-9:00 PM, Thursday, October 18, Place: 241&245 Everitt Lab.
*Final Exam: 8:00-11:00 AM, Saturday, December 15, Place: 252 1MEB.
Prerequisites:
*Undergraduate-level Linear Algebra (such as Math125), Signal and Systems (such as ECE210 and ECE310).
*First-level course in Control (such as ECE 486).
*Familiarity with MATLAB is recommended. If you have never used it before, it is never too late to start learning now.
*You may not need any of the above, as long as you are mathematically sophisticated enough. But you'd better talk to me first before you go ahead and register in this course.
Required Texts:
*ECE 415 Lecture Notes on Control System Theory and Design, T. Basar, S. Meyn and W. Perkins, 2000. Available for purchase at 243 Everitt Lab (IEEE Office), starting August 22.
*Linear System Theory and Design, 3rd edition, C-T. Chen, Oxford University Press, 1999. Available at the campus bookstores.
Supplementary Text:
*Modern Control Theory, W. Brogan, Prentice Hall, 1996. (Also available for purchase at the bookstores)
*Feedback Systems: An Introduction to Scientists and Engineers, K. J. Astrom and R. Murray. (A good book to refresh your memory about undergraduate feedback control. A draft is available online.)
